Diagnosis of histoplasmosis BJM
Guimarães,Allan Jefferson; Nosanchuk,Joshua D.; Zancopé-Oliveira,Rosely Maria.
Endemic mycoses can be challenging to diagnose and accurate interpretation of laboratory data is important to ensure the most appropriate treatment for the patients. Although the definitive diagnosis of histoplasmosis (HP), one of the most frequent endemic mycoses in the world, is achieved by direct diagnosis performed by micro and/or macroscopic observation of Histoplasma capsulatum (H. capsulatum), serologic evidence of this fungal infection is important since the isolation of the etiologic agents is time-consuming and insensitive. A variety of immunoassays have been used to detect specific antibodies to H. capsulatum. The most applied technique for antibody detection is immunodiffusion with sensitivity between 70 to 100 % and specificity of 100%,...

Instructions for Using the MInCir Scale to Assess Methodological Quality in Diagnostic Accuracy Studies International Journal of Morphology
Manterola,Carlos; Cartes-Velasquez,Ricardo; Otzen,Tamara.
Globally, the assessment of methodological quality (MQ) in biomedical research is an area of dynamic development over recent years. Understood as a complex and multidimensional construct, various groups have proposed tools for its assessment. Our team has designed and validated scales to assess MQ of therapy and prognosis studies. However, as with other instruments, it is necessary to specify in detail how it is applied, in such a way as to be able to standardize the measurements made with this instrument. A detailed description is presented of the 3 domains (type of research design [single item domain], size of population studied [single item domain], and methodology 7 items) and 9 items comprising the scale, specifying for each item how to assess the...

Is the cat an important reservoir host for visceral leishmaniasis? A systematic review with meta-analysis J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Asfaram,Shabnam; Fakhar,Mahdi; Teshnizi,Saeed Hosseini.
Abstract In recent years feline leishmanial infections (FLI) have been studied more than ever before in various parts of the world. However, evidence-based knowledge on FLI has remained unavailable. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the status of felines infected by Leishmania spp. worldwide. Data were extracted from 10 available databases over the period of 1982 to 2017. Overall, 78 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were used for data extraction in this systematic review. The overall FLI prevalence by both serological and molecular methods was estimated at 10% (95% CI: 8%-14%). In Italy, both the seroprevalence (24 %) and PCR prevalence (21 %) were found to be higher than in other countries. The most common diagnostic test...

Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis: a systematic review on the performance of non-culture-based diagnostic tests BJID
Falci,Diego R.; Hoffmann,Elias R.; Paskulin,Diego D.; Pasqualotto,Alessandro C..
Abstract The diagnosis of progressive disseminated histoplasmosis is often a challenge to clinicians, especially due to the low sensitivity and long turnaround time of the classic diagnostic methods. In recent years, studies involving a variety of non-culture-based diagnostic tests have been published in the literature. We performed a systematic review by selecting studies evaluating non-culture-based diagnostic methods for progressive disseminated histoplasmosis. We searched for articles evaluating detection of antibody, antigens, as well as DNA-based diagnostic methods. A comprehensive PUBMED, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library search was performed between the years 1956 and 2016. Case reports, review articles, non-human models and series involving...

Top 10 evidence-based recommendations from the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases for the Choosing Wisely Project BJID
Pasqualotto,Alessandro C.; Almeida,Camila S.; Kliemann,Dimas A.; Barcellos,Guilherme B.; Queiroz-Telles,Flávio; Abdala,Edson; Resende,Mariangela; Batista,Filipe P.; Vidal,José E.; Rocha,Jaime; Raboni,Sonia M.; Cimerman,Sergio; Gales,Ana C..
ABSTRACT The Choosing Wisely Initiative aims to collect statements from medical societies all over the world on medical interventions that result in no benefit to patients, with the potential to cause harm. In this article we present the views of the Diagnostic Laboratory Group at the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI). Ten experts from SBI were asked to list 10 diagnostic tests that were perceived as unnecessary in the field of infectious diseases. After voting for the more relevant topics, a questionnaire was sent to all SBI members, in order to select for the most important items. A total of 482 votes were obtained, and the top 10 results are shown in this manuscript. The Choosing Wisely statements of SBI should facilitate clinical practice...
